I talked to my classmates! I was able to identify three main personas: first-timers, casual users, and high-volume users. Drawing from common app flows and personal experiences with other fitness apps, I then asked these user groups about the hypothetical features: joining a waitlist for full classes, saving preferences for quick access to commonly booked classes, and letting non-members book classes without signing up for an account. This was received well by my focus group, so I moved on to research and hi-fi mockups.
The navigation of the current app appeared to have some redundancy between the Home (upcoming classes) and the Classes pages- namely that they both show upcoming classes. With the goal of boosting value or all user groups, the following features were added: personalized recommendations and insights for returning users, as well as a "new user" state which presents a feed of the upcoming available classes.
So how do you engage users when they can't execute a "job-to-be-done"? In this case, the user can't book a full class, so I added a waitlist for full classes. Cancelling classes is common, and Renegade's current app does attempt to re-engage users attempting to book through the app. Waitlisting allows you to reserve a spot for your desired class in case a spot opens up...an easy win for any member-based gym.
Another question: how can an app actively assist users with their fitness goals? The addition of preferences would allow for future iterations where users can see a list of available classes that match the criteria of previously booked classes, ultimately keeping users on track to meet their fitness goals.
The current logged out state forces you to create an account before you view or book classes. The updated experience allows you to book classes, or view plans and one time passes before creating an account, reducing cognitive load and chances for user reactance.
This is a concept for an improved version of this app. I'm proud to say that it's currently in review by the business managers of this gym...🤞🤞
